Question: Does anyone else care about their carbon footprint?

Background:

  • Awareness and attitudes will vary enormously between individuals, organisations and countries.
  • Countries like China and India are producing more and more carbon dioxide as they develop their economies, and this will have a profound influence on their attitudes towards carbon emissions.

InterviewingYour Task:

  • Investigate the attitudes of different people towards carbon emissions by conducting a series of semi-structured interviews.
  • Present this as a report in a similar way to the MMR debate page.  You may wish to combine this activity with a group of your friends.
  • You could follow this up by producing a ‘FACT SHEET’ on how an individual can play their part in reducing their CARBON footprint.
  • You can find instructions on how to conduct an interview here.

Who do you interview and how many different people?

    • Depending on how many of you are taking part, 4 or 5 people will give you a good spread.
    • Interview individuals and not groups to keep it simple.
    • Suggestions for interviewing are:
      • Either your mother or father.
      • One of your grand-parents.
      • Your brother or sister.
      • A sixth form friend of yours.
      • A teacher (could be a scientist or non-scientist)
      • A person from a specific profession e.g. Doctor, Scientist, Clergyman, Businessman, Farmer etc.
      • Someone from another country.

Discussion points:

  • Were any of the interviews surprising and not what you predicted?
  • Do you think that the people who seemed not to care much may change their attitudes?
  • How would you get them to change?
