The ability to create a written argument is central to answering today’s A and AS level questions under the new syllabi. Examiners from the Salters Nuffield Advanced Biology pilot found the argumentation skills of the candidates somewhat lacking.

Developing the skill of preparing a written argument is also important to perform well on the written papers. Many candidates realised the substance of the argument but lost marks through not expressing themselves explicitly enough.
